ALAA values privacy. This privacy policy describes how African Language Academy Australia collects, uses, and discloses your data. Covered: Crucial information and who we are, how and why we collect, use, and process your personal data, when and why we will disclose it to third party organisations. The following Privacy Policy and Terms of Service govern ALAA’s service (the “Service”). This Privacy Policy may change. Our Site will display all changes. You can check the latest Privacy Policy at www.alaa.com.au/privacy. You accept the updated Privacy Policy by using the Service or Site after any such changes. We do not gather child data on this website. African Language Academy Australia manages your data (collectively referred to as “ALAA”, “we”, “us” or “our” in this Privacy Policy). The Australian data protection regulator, Office of the Australian Information Commission accepts complaints at any time. Please contact us before contacting the OAIC so we can address your concerns. This website may link to third-party websites, plug-ins, and apps. Enabling those linkages or connections may allow third parties to collect or share your data. Third-party websites’ privacy policies are not our responsibility. Read every website’s privacy notice after leaving ours.
- Information collected and received.
ALAA collects your username, email address, spoken and studied languages, optional personal or preference information, and/or profile image when you register for an account.
ALAA also automatically gathers and generates services metadata, log data, device information, IP addresses, third-party data, and cookie information.
We gather, use, and distribute Aggregated Data like statistical or demographic data for any purpose. Aggregated Data is not personal data because it does not identify you. We may aggregate your Usage Data to measure the percentage of users accessing a website feature. If we combine Aggregated Data with your personal data to directly or indirectly identify you, we recognise the combined data as personal data and use it in accordance with this privacy notice. We do not collect your Special Categories of Personal Data (this includes details about your race or ethnicity, religious or philosophical beliefs, sexual orientation, political opinions, trade union membership, information about your health and genetic and biometric data). We don’t collect criminal records either.
We may contact you for research. You agree to our research terms by participating. Your ALAA account will help us get accurate results in some of our studies. Marketing may use aggregated results. Personal information will not be shared. Your personal data will be securely stored during the research and erased after publication. You can always opt out of research.
The Service lets you create a profile, develop relationships, send and receive messages, search and query, enrol in events and courses, and communicate information through multiple channels.
This info is not required, but without it, we cannot deliver the service.
- Data use.
ALAA uses your personal data for the following purposes:
(i) To provide, update, maintain, and protect our services, websites, apps, and business
(ii) as required by applicable law, legal process, or regulation
(iii) to respond to your questions and comments
(iv) to send marketing and transactional communications, including email, push notifications, SMS, and in-app messages, about the Service
(v) statistical purposes
(vi) billing, account administration, and other administrative activities (vii) investigating and preventing security issues and misuse
(viii) other purposes as indicated to you at the point of collection
ALAA uses such information to customise marketing and Content, fulfil your requests for products and services, develop our Service, contact you, perform research, and offer anonymized reporting for internal and external clients like advertisers. If you share an ALAA invite link with a friend and they click it, they will see your profile image (if you generated one) Your profile options enable you to delete and alter this info.
Please note that ALAA does not collect or keep payment information when you purchase a Paid Service (including any Premium membership). Instead, our payment service providers save and use it to complete the purchase.
Upon registering for the Service, you can opt out of ALAA promotional communications.
From the communication or your preferences, you can opt out of all email, push notifications, and SMS.
We received your email data from your organisation if you registered with an organisation email address. In this scenario, you received a signup message. Unsubscribe at any moment.
- Personal data storage and transfer.
RETAINING.
ALAA will retain your personal data as needed to fulfil legitimate business purposes, conduct audits, comply with (and demonstrate compliance with) legal responsibilities, resolve disputes, and enforce our agreements. We consider the amount, nature, and sensitivity of personal data, the potential risk of harm from unauthorised use or disclosure, the purposes for which we process your personal data and whether we can achieve those purposes through other means, and the applicable legal requirements to determine the appropriate retention period. admin@alaa.com.au to erase your personal info. Financial data will be stored in compliance with local legislation.
Cookies.
A website sends a small bit of data, usually an anonymous unique identifier, to your browser and stores it on your computer’s hard drive. Your browser can accept, refuse, or inform you of cookie settings. To erase cookies from your computer, follow your browser’s instructions to find the cookie file or directory. The Service may not work if you reject all cookies.
ALAA enables advertisers and service providers create and access cookies on your computer. Other entities’ cookie use is governed by their privacy policies, not this one.
- PERSONAL INFORMATION
We show your Profile information (excluding your email address and password) to friends-seekers and support other Site functionalities. ALAA does not rent, sell, or share your personal information except to offer products or services you’ve requested, with your permission, or in the following circumstances:
Where ALAA is responding to a subpoena, court order, or legal process, or to establish or exercise our legal rights or to defend ourselves against legal claims; where ALAA believes it is necessary to share information in order to investigate, prevent, or take action regarding illegal activities, suspected fraud, situations involving potential threats to the physical safety of any person, violations of ALAA’s Terms of Service, or as otherwise required by law; ALAA will warn you before transferring your data to a new privacy policy.
We may share your email addresses with Facebook, Google, Braze, and Snapchat for targeted advertising.
Third parties must protect your data and follow the law. We only allow our third-party service providers to process your personal data for the purposes we specify.
Remember that anyone can gather and use your personal information online. Posting personal information online may lead to unsolicited messages.
Third-party ads.
ALAA sometimes shows personalised ads. Targeted ads may be assumed to meet targeting criteria by advertisers (for example, men ages 18-24 from a particular geographic area). ALAA does not share your personal information with advertisers when you interact with targeted ads. But, by engaging with or viewing an ad, you consent to the advertiser assuming you fulfil the targeting criteria.
Security and confidentiality.
We will protect personal data from loss, theft, unauthorised access, disclosure, copying, use, or alteration using reasonable and industry-standard security methods.
Only you and we can see your password-protected personal data. You promise to keep your password(s) private.
ALAA limits access to your personal information to personnel who ALAA reasonably believes need to see it to provide products or the Service to you or conduct their jobs.
ALAA protects your personal data through physical, electronic, and procedural measures. Internet data transmissions are not 100% safe. ALAA cannot guarantee the security of your data. In particular, you use the Service at your own risk and are responsible for preventing access to your computer and keeping it free of malicious code, spyware, viruses, Trojans, etc. that may monitor any data you enter into the Service, including email address and payment information. We are not liable for user violations of this clause.
ALAA employs secure payment service providers to make Paid Service payments secure.
Third-party sites.
This Privacy Policy does not apply to websites linked from the Site or Service. To understand how other websites gather, use, and disclose personal data, ALAA suggests reading their privacy statements.
Lesson recording.
You consent to ALAA recording lessons. This recording is mainly for lesson and tutoring quality. Recordings will not be shared, targeted, or utilised for sales, marketing, or promotion. ALAA users consent to gratuitous, uninvited, and unrestricted recordings. You authorise ALAA to utilise these recordings without remuneration or fiduciary duty. admin@alaa.com.au can erase recordings.
- Legal rights You’re allowed:
Request your data (commonly known as a “data subject access request”). This lets you access and verify our authorised processing of your personal data.
Correct your personal data. This lets you change any missing or erroneous data we have about you, albeit we may need to validate your new data.
Remove your data. This lets you ask us to delete personal data if we have no need to keep it. You can also ask us to delete or destroy your personal data if you successfully exercised your right to object to processing (see below), if we unlawfully processed your data, or if local legislation requires us to do so. However, we may not be able to erase your data for legal reasons, which we will notify you of at the time of your request.
Object to processing of your personal data if we are relying on a legitimate interest (or those of a third party) and your position makes you feel it impacts your fundamental rights and freedoms. You might also oppose direct marketing. We may demonstrate strong legitimate grounds to handle your information that trump your rights and freedoms.
Restrict personal data processing. This allows you to ask us to suspend the processing of your personal data in the following situations:
(a) if you want us to establish the data’s accuracy
(b) if our use of the data is unlawful but you do not want us to erase it
(c) if you need us to hold the data even if we no longer require it to establish, exercise, or defend legal claims
(d) if you have objected to our use of your data but we need to verify whether we have overriding
Request your personal data. We will provide your personal data in a structured, frequently used, machine-readable format to you or a third party you choose. This right only applies to automated information you consented to use or that we utilised to build a contract with you.
You can withdraw consent at any time. Any processing done before you withdraw your consent will remain legal. We may not be able to supply some products or services if you withdraw consent. When you withdraw consent, we’ll let you know.
Contact us to exercise your rights. Personal data access is free (or to exercise any of the other rights). If your request is unreasonable, repetitive, or excessive, we may impose a fair fee. We may also deny your request. We may need particular details to verify your identity and validate your right to view your personal data (or to exercise any of your other rights). This prevents unauthorised access to personal data. We may contact you for more information about your request to speed up our answer. We react to all valid requests within a month. If your request is complex or you submitted multiple requests, it may take longer than a month. We’ll notify and update you.
Disclosures of Personal Information for Commercial or Financial Reasons.
We do not sell consumers’ personal information, but we do disclose it to other firms you should expect to contact with, such your employer and companies we have partnered with to assist provide some of our services, like marketing services providers and event sponsors. ALAA broadly defines “selling” as any transfer of your personal information to a third party for consideration if they may use it for their own purposes (such as in advertising or analytics). We may have shared online identifiers, Site usage data, and inferences about you with our social media, advertising, and analytics partners for marketing and other reasons, as is usual among website operators. We never collect or share personal information from children under 16. We have provided personal information in all or almost all categories listed in this Privacy Policy for commercial purposes. Right to Access and Information Regarding Personal Information:
You have the right to request that we disclose to you the categories and specific pieces of personal information we have collected about you. Specifically, you have the right to request that we disclose the following to you:

Our commercial reason for collecting personal data;
The categories of third parties with which we disclose personal information; The information we acquired about you;
The categories of personal information about you, if any, that we have disclosed for monetary or other valuable compensation and the categories of third parties to which we have disclosed the information, by category or categories for each third party; and

If not already disclosed or provided by the disclosures in this Privacy Policy, we will deliver the personal information and information categories that we are required by law to disclose to you in the manner required by law within 45 days of a verifiable request, unless we notify you that we require additional time to respond, in which case we will respond within the additional time required by law. If you have an account, we may send you such information.
Right to Opt Out: You can refuse to disclose personal information for money or other valuable benefit. See “Requests to Exercise Your Rights” above to opt-out.
Right to No Discrimination: We cannot discriminate against you for exercising your rights.
